LOOKING FOR A NEW SUITE FOR YOUR HOME?

I have been an upholstery cleaner in Liverpool for many years, in this time I have cleaned every imaginable fabric type with all kinds of problems.

There are different ways to clean fabric too.

Here is a blog post on what to look out for when buying a new piece of upholstered furniture.

So think about it, a new 3 piece suite, corner sofa, love chair or whatever you fancy isn’t going to be cheap. Not if you want it to last a good length of time. There are always special deals at certain shops, but my advice is (in the main) that you usually get what you pay for. Saying that, I have cleaned suites in Liverpool that have been on their last legs and only a year old, as well as couches that have been in tip top condition and over 30 years old!

TIPS FOR THE SIZE OF SOFA

Easy enough yet some make a bad choice here.  The suite may look the correct size in the furniture shop, but will it fit in your house?

You need to measure the space the suite is going to sit in.  Also, don’t forget even more importantly will the sofa fit through the front door, along the hallway and then left into the lounge?  A good tip here is to buy a suite that comes apart.  A lot of couches nowadays with big arms screw off at the base.

IN THE SOFA SHOP

Feel the weight of the suite (carefully) as a heavy suite should have great support and strength.  Are the cushions foam filled or feather?  Whatever they are, are they nice and plump.  Are the seating and back cushions fixed or loose?  My tip on buying a sofa is to buy loose style cushions.  This way you can reverse them (make sure they are symmetrical), this way they will last a lot longer.

STYLE MATTERS

How is your lounge decorated and does this change often?  If you change a lot then maybe a straight design, light pastel colour will benefit you.  A deep purple velour suite may not last if you change the decor drastically too often.

WHERES THE COUCH GOING?

If you have for example a long through lounge, a corner sofa could work as these can be quite long.  A small lounge may need a 2 seater couch with 2 armchairs.  Again, if you have a chair that gets used a lot, buy one where you can flip the cushions over so the wear spreads evenly.

WHO’S SITTING ON THE UPHOLSTERY?

Are you tall or small?  Don’t forget that a tall person may be more comfortable with a deep seated sofa.  Not too tall?  Get a shallow one.  Makes getting up out of the couch so much easier too.

If you have kids don’t be fooled by getting a dark coloured suite as these simply show sticky fingers and bits off fluff readily.  Get a couch that has a manmade fibre as these will always clean up well when the time comes. (always get a professional clean, as diy cleans just rub the dirt around and the sticky soap attracts more dirt)
